The law firms Michelet & Co. and Schjødt have agreed to merge, creating the clear market leader among law firms within the oil, gas and oilfield services industries in Norway, and a strong position among European firms generally. The combined firm also strengthens its leading position in the overall Norwegian legal services market.
Michelet & Co. started its business in 2015 as a specialised law firm within the oil, gas and oilfield services industries with offices in Oslo and London. The firm has oil and gas companies, oilfield service players, investment banks, investors, banks and petroleum regulatory authorities and shipping companies among its clients. The firm’s lawyers are recognised as leading in their markets, including by the relevant law firm ranking directories. The lawyers in the London office are highly regarded for their practice in complex offshore project work, LNG, shipping and floating production and advice clients globally.
The lawyers in Michelet & Co. will continue their specialised activities in Schjødt together with Schjødt’s current team in the oil and gas-, shipping and offshore sector as well as in cooperation with the firm’s special competence in other areas, such as dispute resolution, mergers and acquisitions, financing, capital markets, tax and employment law. The merged firm will have a unique breadth in skills and experience covering the whole value chain of Norway’s largest industry. Michelet & Co.’s London office will continue as an important base for the combined firm’s UK and international clients in the oil and oilfield services sector, and within shipping.
As part of the merger Michelet & Co. will become incorporated into Schjødt and the combined firm will continue its activities under the Schjødt name. The transaction is expected to take effect from 1 January 2019.
Olav Kolstad, Chairman of the board in Schjødt, states that “Michelet & Co. has since the beginning impressed us by its very strong market position. They have unquestionably some of the leading individuals in the specialist legal community, and they have advised on many of the largest and most important transactions in the market. By combining two of the leading teams of lawyers in the oil and gas space we will achieve a position in Norway without comparisons. The London office also brings an exciting new dimension for Schjødt that will benefit both our international and domestic clients.”
Christian Fredrik Michelet, Michelet & Co., states that “Michelet & Co. has succeeded in establishing itself as a leading law firm within our core sectors. After considering several alternative options we have found that the legal, commercial and strategic international experience of our Norwegian and English team in close cooperation with Schjødt’s leading competence will enable us to reach our vision of becoming the clear leader in the Norwegian market, while creating a legal centre of excellence for the oil, gas and oilfield services sectors also in a European perspective. We look forward to offer our clients a full range of integrated legal services together with our colleagues in Schjødt.”
